Refresher Courses Prior to Fall
The week-long Summer Academy will prepare you for the first year in college-level English and Math. Led by faculty from our English and Math Departments, you will learn fundamental skills to apply in your college-level coursework.

Offering a supportive environment that creates community and motivates learning, the Academy is specifically designed to build on your analytical and critical thinking skills to have confidence in your first-year transfer-level college composition and math classes. We know that nutrition feeds the mind, so each student will receive a free “grab-n-go” lunch sponsored by EVC FRESH.
How to join
This is a free service with learning materials included. There are no registration fees for the Summer Academy. You must be currently enrolled in one of the Fall 2026 courses listed below. These Summer Academy will prepare students for these English and Math courses in the fall of 2026. In order to participate in the Summer Academy, you must be enrolled in one of these specific fall 2026 courses. These academies will not provide college credit or substitution for the courses listed. The academies are designed to prepare you for these fall course.
For Students in Classes:
- Academic Reading and Writing- ENGL C1000
- Elementary Statistics, Introduction to Statistics, STAT C1000

English Academy
Enhance your existing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. As you learn about effective reading strategies, you will practice them as you analyze poetry, short stories, and other short texts. In addition, you will be able to learn about prewriting strategies that can help you organize and develop your writing further. The informal writings that you complete in the English Academy will prepare you for the kinds of writing that is required in your first-year English courses. There will be learning opportunities within small groups and through one-on-one interactions with faculty, so you will always be part of a supportive environment.

Math Academy
In the Math Academy, you will be able to enhance your existing basic, intermediate, or advanced Algebra skills. The Academy is designed to help you review mathematical topics and technological tools required in your first-year math courses. As you learn about effective math strategies, you will practice them as you solve equations, graph lines, and evaluate expressions. In addition, you will learn strategies that can help you organize and develop your math skills further. There will be learning opportunities within small groups and through one-on-one interactions with faculty, so you will always be part of a supportive environment.

Preparing you for transfer to a university: Evergreen Valley College (EVC) continues to lead the way when it comes to creating seamless university transfer pathways for students.
